Historical Context of the North Macedonian Economy: Structure, Institutions and Economic Philosophy From the Ottoman Empire and Yugoslavia

Authors

North Macedonia’s economic history is deeply influenced by its past under the Ottoman Empire and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. These perio-ds shaped the country’s institutional framework, infrastructure, and economic organization, leaving a lasting impact on its contemporary economic structure. This introduction explores the economic legacies of these historical periods, hi-ghlighting their enduring influence on North Macedonia’s development. Besides, North Macedonia’s economic development has been deeply shaped by two major historical frameworks. These can be briefly stated; The Ottoman imperial system and the socialist economic planning of Yugoslavia. These pe-riods not only influenced the country’s economic structure but also left lasting imprints on economic thought, policy approaches, and societal attitudes toward economic organization. Therefore, it remains an important question how the economic philosophy of the two periods in question shaped the development trajectory of North Macedonia.
