Synopsis
The concept of time is at the forefront at Virginia Woolf’s novels. Being a characteristic in her works, the author suggests it as a major concern in both personal and artistic level of her life, and its careful involvement in the two is in fact what makes her concern worthy of further analysis. In this paper, I want to examine the passage of time in Woolf’s novels in light of the Quranic chapter Al Asr. In this short chapter, God vows upon time and underscores the quality and importance of time as long as we are able to perform good deeds, hold on to the truth and advice each other on patience. In this perspective, the works of Virginia match in terms of the passage of time with the meaning of the surah Asr in the sense that as the times passes, the characters are constantly searching for meaning whether inside or outside themselves. This search leads them to the fundamental questions about life and death, and how much they are able to benefit from this search is what I will be looking forward to find out in this research. For this analysis, I will use Woolf’s eminent novels Mrs. Dalloway, The Waves and To the Lighthouse. The hypothesis suggests that the passage of time in Virginia Woolf’s novels in light of the chapter Al Asr reveals the theme of the search for meaning and self-reflection.
